Editorial Policy — Denville Rocks Restaurant Guide & Business Directory

This Editorial Policy explains how Denville Rocks creates, labels, and moderates content across the Denville Restaurant Guide and the Denville Business Directory (together, the “Directories”) at denvillerocks.com. It is operated by Cartwright Web Strategies LLC, doing business as Denville Rocks (“Denville Rocks,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), based in Denville, New Jersey.

This policy is supplemental to, and incorporated by reference into, our Terms of Service. It does not cover the separate community discussion features at community.denvillerocks.com, which are governed by that platform’s own Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Plain-English summary

  • We’re an independent local directory. Being listed doesn’t mean we endorse a business, and paying for a Featured Listing doesn’t buy editorial praise or good reviews.
  • Listing descriptions come either from the business itself or from our own research (sometimes AI-assisted), and either way we write in a neutral, factual tone — no “best,” “top,” or similar claims.
  • Right now, only Featured Listings support user ratings. Paying for a Featured Listing does not guarantee positive ratings, and we don’t take down genuine negative reviews just because a business dislikes them.
  • We review ratings and submitter activity manually. Fake reviews, coordinated “review bombing,” and abusive submissions get removed, and repeat offenders get blocked.
  • Being located in our coverage area doesn’t entitle a business to a listing. Inclusion is at our discretion, and we can decline or remove a listing without needing to give a reason.
  • Business owners can request removal of their own listing at any time.

1. Purpose & Scope

This policy explains how listings are written and labeled, how Featured Listings and their associated ratings feature work, and how corrections and disputes are handled. It applies to every listing in the Denville Restaurant Guide and Denville Business Directory, regardless of category or plan tier.

2. Editorial Independence

Denville Rocks is an independent, third-party local directory. We are not owned by, operated by, or affiliated with any business appearing in the Directories, and inclusion in a Directory — free or Featured — is not an endorsement, certification, or guarantee of quality by Denville Rocks.

Basic listings are provided as a public informational resource for the Denville, NJ community and surrounding Morris County area. They are not paid placements, and their inclusion, position, or content is not influenced by any payment, gift, or other consideration from the listed business.

Where a business has purchased a Featured Listing (Section 4), that fact is disclosed. Payment for a Featured Listing affects visibility and available features only — it does not affect, and cannot buy, the substance of any description, rating, or review.

3. How Listings Are Created

Listing descriptions are created one of two ways:

  • Business-submitted — information supplied directly by the business owner or an authorized representative.
  • Denville Rocks–authored — written by Denville Rocks, in some cases with the assistance of AI tools, based on publicly available information (business websites, public menus, published hours, and similar sources).

Regardless of source, published descriptions are written in a neutral, third-person, factual tone. Denville Rocks–authored content avoids superlative or endorsement language (e.g., “best,” “top,” “premier,” “must-visit”), because we are not making a comparative judgment across every business in the area and don’t want a listing mistaken for a personal recommendation.

We make reasonable efforts to keep listing information accurate and current, but we do not independently verify every submitted fact (hours, pricing, ownership, licensure, etc.), and third-party information can go out of date. Denville Rocks makes no warranty as to the accuracy or completeness of any listing. If something is wrong, see Section 6.

4. Featured Listings (Paid Placement)

Businesses may purchase a Featured Listing — a paid upgrade that can include additional listing details (such as website, hours, price range, and amenities), higher visibility/placement within the Directory, and eligibility for the ratings feature described in Section 5.

Featured Listings are clearly labeled as such wherever they appear, so visitors can distinguish paid placement from standard listings.

Purchasing a Featured Listing does not:

  • Guarantee positive coverage, ratings, or reviews;
  • Entitle a business to remove or suppress genuine negative ratings;
  • Change our neutral, third-person editorial voice for that listing’s description.

If Denville Rocks later offers other forms of sponsored content (e.g., sponsored articles, “editor’s picks,” advertising banners), that content will be clearly labeled as sponsored/advertising and kept separate from directory listings, consistent with FTC guidance on endorsements and disclosures.

5. User Ratings & Reviews (Featured Listings Only)

At this time, the ability for visitors to submit a star rating or written review is available only on Featured Listings. A basic listing without a visible rating reflects its plan tier, not a Denville Rocks judgment about the business.

Ratings and reviews are user-generated content submitted by individual visitors — not written, edited in substance, or paid for by Denville Rocks.

Moderation. Submitted ratings/reviews are reviewed by Denville Rocks before or shortly after publication. We may decline to publish, or may remove, a rating or review that:

  • Is fraudulent, fake, or not based on a genuine experience with the business;
  • Was submitted by someone with an undisclosed personal, financial, or competitive conflict of interest;
  • Is part of coordinated “review bombing” or an organized attempt to manipulate a business’s rating;
  • Contains hate speech, threats, defamatory false statements of fact, private personal information about individuals, or content otherwise prohibited by our Terms of Service.

As part of this review, Denville Rocks may examine submitter account activity and IP address information to identify fraudulent, duplicate, or coordinated submissions. Where a submitter is found to be engaged in review manipulation or abuse, Denville Rocks may block that IP address or account from further submissions. A record of the reason for any such action is kept internally.

What we will not do. Denville Rocks does not remove a genuine, good-faith negative rating or review simply because the featured business requests it or disagrees with the assessment. A Featured Listing subscription is not a guarantee of favorable treatment.

6. Corrections, Disputes & Removal Requests

Any business or member of the public may request:

  • A correction to inaccurate listing information;
  • Removal of a listing at the request of the business owner or an authorized representative, for any reason — including a business that has closed, or one that simply no longer wishes to be included in the Directories;
  • Review of a specific rating or review believed to violate Section 5.

Send requests to info@denvillerocks.com with the listing URL, the nature of the request, and confirmation that you are the business owner or an authorized representative. We aim to acknowledge requests within 5 business days. Removal requests from a verified owner/representative are honored promptly; we may take reasonable steps to confirm authorization before acting, to prevent a listing from being removed by someone other than its owner (for example, a competitor). Disputes over removal of a negative-but-genuine rating are evaluated against the standards in Section 5, and Denville Rocks retains final discretion over that outcome.

7. Our Right to Edit, Reject, or Remove Content

No entitlement to a listing. Operating a business within Denville, NJ or the broader area covered by the Directories does not entitle that business to a listing, free or Featured. Denville Rocks may decline to list, or may remove an existing listing, at its sole discretion and for any lawful reason or no stated reason at all — including, without limitation, capacity limits, editorial fit, repeated abusive or bad-faith communication with Denville Rocks staff, or any other business reason. Denville Rocks is under no obligation to explain or justify a decision not to list, or to remove, a particular business. This discretion is exercised consistent with applicable law.

Beyond that, Denville Rocks reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to:

  • Edit a listing description for accuracy, length, formatting, or compliance with this policy;
  • Decline to publish, or remove, any listing or user-submitted rating/review that violates this policy, our Terms of Service, or applicable law;
  • Discontinue the Featured Listing program, or any feature of it (including the ratings feature), at any time.

Exercising these editorial rights does not make Denville Rocks the “publisher” of user-submitted content beyond what the law otherwise requires; ratings and reviews remain the statements of the individual who submitted them.

8. Disclaimer of Warranties & Limitation of Liability

The Directories are provided for general informational purposes only and do not constitute professional, legal, health, or safety advice. Denville Rocks makes no representation or warranty, express or implied, regarding the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any listing, description, rating, or review. Use of the Directories, and any decision to patronize a listed business, is at your own risk.

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Cartwright Web Strategies LLC and its officers, employees, and contractors are not liable for any loss or damage arising from reliance on information in the Directories, or from any interaction with a listed business.

This section supplements, and does not replace, the limitation of liability in our Terms of Service.

9. Governing Law

This Editorial Policy is governed by the laws of the State of New Jersey, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any dispute arising from this policy that isn’t resolved informally is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the state or federal courts located in Morris County, New Jersey, consistent with our Terms of Service.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Editorial Policy as our Directories and features evolve. The “Last updated” date above reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of the Directories after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
